From trash cans to gold chains, how college football coaches are motivating players

College football pregame pep talks aren’t enough anymore, and some coaches are now turning to tangible rewards that are given out for big plays. In the mid-1990s, Virginia Tech Hokies introduced its lunch pail, a black, old-school metal lunch box that represented the work ethic of the team’s defense. Other schools like Texas A&M Aggies, Tennessee Vols and Miami Hurricanes have followed, and come up with a variety of props — like wrestling-type belts and chains — to fire up their players.
